Yoga for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired

Colette Barry who was also born with nerve deafness believes having an hearing impairment can effect one's physical balance.

What Yoga for the Deaf offers:

  1. Sign language Interpretations (ASL) or Close Caption: All Yoga Programs will provide an ASL Interpreter or Close Captions allowing students to fully understand every aspect of their Yoga session. Provided interpretation will fully explain in detail, body alignment, rhythmic breathing, mental focus (drishti) and mental visualization. The more one absorbs the practical and mental concepts of Yoga the more rewarding their experience will be.
  2.  Demonstrations of Alignment:  Perfect alignment produces optimum results.   In my “Yoga for the Deaf” Program I provide detailed demonstrations of each Yoga pose (asana) before we even attempt the pose.   This pre-demonstration allows the student to observe proper body, hand and feet placement, breathing patterns and direction of focus.   In Yoga proper alignment and ’engagement’ of that alignment when extending and stretching is essential.   When each asana is achieved as intended the body begins to heal and pain and stiffness disappear.   Clear explanations of proper alignment are emphasized so students can fully enjoy the benefits and rewards of a body ‘well centered’.

  3.  Visual Meditation:  Finally, the ultimate benefit of  ”Yoga for the Deaf” session is meditation.   Visual meditation is a powerful antidote for a multitude of ailments.   Stress, tension, depression, anxiety, hypertension and much more are greatly alleviated through the practice of Meditation.   The “Yoga for the Deaf” Program is designed to allow those that are deaf and hearing impaired the opportunity to experience the wonderful ecstasy of ‘visualization’.   While the instructor walks the student through a peaceful, imaginary journey the interpreter paints the same serene image for the deaf and hearing impaired.   This beautiful duel effort of Meditation and Interpretation makes Visual meditation a powerful event in every session.

“The Barry’s Method” is Healing

You are a miracle worker! I can not, nor can I ever put into words beyond this…….You have saved my life. And now I let others that I served with know what you are doing for me and that if they too wish to survive they must at all costs, pursue these same endeavors.

It did not take me long to realize that it does not take you long to realize what your students need. Even when we the students don’t know.
